Negroamaro Rosato NV No. 5
Varietal:
100% Negroamaro (Solera)
Alcohol:
12.5%
Vinification Notes:
A non-vintage rosato blend of Bricarelli Negroamaro from six vintages: 2018 - 2023. Each year we pick the entire (tiny) block of Negroamaro at Bricarelli Ranch for rosato. Grapes are foottread and left in the press on stems and skins overnight before pressing the next morning. Martha started this method with her first vintage of Negroamaro in 2017 intuitively, but read years later that this has historic precedent in Italian winemaking: a method for rosato called “Vino di una notte” or “One night wine”. It’s amazing that certain grapes can lead the way down a path that was trodden a century prior but then forgotten. Leaving the grapes on skins provides extra structure to hold the strong core of acidity we naturally find at Bricarelli Ranch in Ukiah and increases the wine’s aging potential. After pressing, the wine is settled overnight, and racked to neutral barrel where native primary and secondary fermentation occur. Inspired by the beautiful aged qualities of Lopez de Heredia Viña Tondonia Rosé Gran Reserva, Martha knew she wanted to make aged rosés, but instead of a vintage wine, Martha opted to create a Solera. Each vintage spends a full one to two years aging on lees prior to being racked into the Solera. Unfined. Lightly Filtered.
Vineyard:
Bricarelli Ranch, Ukiah, Mendocino County, 17-year-old head-trained, dry farmed (non-irrigated) vineyard, farmed by us to organic principles (no pesticides, herbicides, or synthetic fertilizers); gravelly loam soils.
Tasting Notes:
Invite the shift in seasons with a deep and complex nose of cedar and dried orange slices. This solera started with the 2020 vintage and offers the complexity that only time and patience can do to a wine during élevage. Embrace olive oil-like fattiness and a slightly saline finish while the elegant acidity slowly rolls over the tongue—it’s truly a rosato like you’ve never experienced before.
Martha's Notes
Our fifth non-vintage Negroamaro Rosato (NV No. 5) is a further ode to the rewards of patience and extended èlevage. This latest edition comprises Negroamaro Rosato from six vintages, 2018 through 2023. The truth is, when Tim and I barrel-tasted this wine over the past year we both couldn’t overlook the beautifully aged qualities —full of cedar, spice, and acidity through a lightly fragrant orange finish—and squirreled away just enough wine for a very limited 2025 bottling.
